Godzilla Stop-motion movie(part 2)
Today I presented my Stop-motion films at the art academy in Mechelen as well as the maquette I used during filming.
This project was inspired by Godzilla movies from the 60’s and 70’s which used miniatures and practical effects in a time before computer graphics. You can tell its not real which gives these movies an interesting charm that I wanted to replicate in this work. The buildings aren’t photorealistic at all, but they have enough detail selling the immersion. While in actuality all 4 movies I made all take place on a 100cm by 60cm table.
All 4 video’s that will be displayed from the 19th until 22th of june during the expo at ‘Academie Mechelen’
The 18th of June a jury was held to review works like mine and those from other students at the academy. In total I made 4 films intended to be watched on my CRT-TV during the expo.

A shot from video 1: Godzilla ultimate creature
The first film was made without stop-motion just relying on video’s and photos. Water and lighting set-ups were used to give the film a dramatic feel as a visual support to the musical score originally from the theatrical movie Godzilla Minus One(2023). Tuning the settings of my camera I was able to make it seem as if this movie was shot in the dark instead of in broad daylight at the art academy.
The set up of the background was altered to differentiate this film from the others. This was the last film I made, wanting to try something experimental in my final day at the art academy (excluding the jury and deliberation).

a shot from video 2: godzilla symbol of destruction
The second movie mostly used Stop-motion sometimes altered by images to better match the flow of the musical number ‘persecution of the masses’ from the 2016 movie ‘Shin Godzilla’ that plays in the background. I really wanted to use this part of the score to really sell this 15cm figure as a towering powerfull giant.

The third film is making of video describing the process and reason for making the display and films. Showing how Godzilla is a blank slate that can convey any message which is why 38 movies have been made of the character thus far.
The fourth film was the original stop-motion I made using an older version of the display which you can read on this website in the first part of this project.

I am happy I was able to conclude my 11 year journey at the art academy with this project. Having really enjoyed this project I am looking forward to hopefully study animation in my futher studies starting late 2025.
